Matthew·Prayer and stillness·34 of 34

Rest unto your souls

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Matthew 11:28–30 · King James Version

The heaviness is the yoke you already wear. His yoke is a shared life, and it is light because it is not carried alone.

An inner reading

Labor and heavy laden describe the spiritual condition as much as the economic one: the exhaustion of being your own source, of holding an identity up by effort. Rest is offered as a gift of coming, not as a vacation you must deserve. You come, and rest is given. The soul finds it; the soul does not construct it.

A yoke is still a yoke. This is not the cancellation of a life’s work. It is a different pairing. Meek and lowly in heart means the one you learn from is not another tyrant of the spirit, not a louder version of your inner overseer. Easy and light are metaphysical claims about alignment. What matches the true life does not have the weight of self-forcing. What exhausts you is often the other yoke, the one you forgot you could set down.
