Greater works
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
John 14:12 · King James Version
Belief is not admiration from a distance. It is the same life continuing, and widening, in whoever consents.
An inner reading
The saying refuses to leave the works of Christ as a closed museum. Whoever believes — whoever shares the standing-under of that life — does the works also. “Greater” has unsettled readers for centuries. Read metaphysically, it is not a contest of spectacle. It is the life of the Father, no longer localized in one body walking Galilee, now finding as many doors as there are consenting minds.
“Because I go unto my Father” names the condition. The personal presence withdraws from being an external object to lean on, so that the same presence can be inward and universal. Dependence on a Christ outside you gives way to participation in the Christ-life. The works are greater in reach because the worker is no longer only one pair of hands.
