The bread of life

I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

John 6:35 · King James Version

Christ does not hand you a portion of God. Christ is the substance the hunger was for.

An inner reading

Crowds had just eaten bread that perished and wanted the sign repeated. The answer identifies the giver with the gift. “I am the bread” means the divine life is food: something you take into yourself until it becomes you, not information you admire from across a table.

Hunger and thirst name the two lacks a human being organizes a life to escape. Coming and believing are how the lack is met — approach, and inner assent. Never hunger, never thirst, read metaphysically, is not the end of ordinary meals. It is the end of seeking in created things the substance that only the I AM is. You may still eat. You no longer ask bread to be God.
