John·The one life·26 of 34
A well within
But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
John 4:14 · King James Version
The life Christ gives does not stay a drink taken from outside. It becomes a spring in the one who receives it.
An inner reading
Thirst, in this conversation, is the repeating emptiness that no outer well finishes — approval, sensation, religious novelty, the next answer. Those quench and then thirst returns, because they were never the source. The water Christ gives is of another order. It does not have to be fetched again from a place. It is in him: a well, and not a cistern.
“Springing up” is continual, not stored. Everlasting life is not merely duration added to the end of a biography. It is life that does not depend on being replenished by the world. The metaphysical shift is from consumer of God to someone in whom the livingness of God has begun to move on its own.
