John·The Father·10 of 34

Spirit and truth

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

John 4:24 · King James Version

What God is, worship must match. Spirit is not approached by a merely outer rite.

An inner reading

Spoken beside a well, to a woman whose people argued about the correct mountain, this saying moves worship off the map. If God is Spirit, then God is not a location, a lineage, or an argument about either. Spirit is incorporeal presence — real, but not an object among objects.

Truth, paired with spirit, keeps the saying from floating into vagueness. Worship in truth is agreement with what is, not a mood and not a performance. The metaphysical invitation is exacting: stop trying to place God, and meet God in the only medium God is — living awareness, honest all the way down.
