John·Light·9 of 34
The light of life
I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
John 8:12 · King James Version
To follow is to walk by the same light that says I am — not by a map of opinions.
An inner reading
Two sayings now sit side by side. Ye are the light. I am the light. They do not compete. The I AM speaking in Christ is the light of the world; the disciple is that light individualized, not a second source. Following is not trailing a person through geography. It is consenting to see by that light rather than by the darker familiarities of fear and self-story.
“The light of life” is a precise phrase. Not the light of ideas about life — the light life itself sheds when it is no longer mistaken for biography. Darkness, metaphysically, is the attempt to walk as if one were one’s own dim origin. The promise is not that circumstances become easy. It is that the walker is no longer using darkness as a lamp.
