Matthew·Light·7 of 34

The single eye

The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!

Matthew 6:22–23 · King James Version

The body follows the eye. A divided attention makes a divided life.

An inner reading

The eye, here, is the way attention is aimed. A single eye is not a narrowed life. It is undivided intention — one aim, not a public aim and a private one. When attention is single, the whole “body” of one’s living fills with light: conduct, health of mind, the tone of a day.

The warning is sharper than a moral. Light that has become darkness is perception so turned around that confusion feels like clarity, and self-interest feels like truth. That is great darkness precisely because it does not look dark from inside. The remedy is not more opinions. It is the reuniting of the eye.
