Matthew·The kingdom within·2 of 34
Poor in spirit
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:3 · King James Version
The kingdom opens where the mind stops claiming a life it made by itself.
An inner reading
Poverty of spirit is not self-hatred, and it is not a mood of lack. It is the emptying of the claim “I am the source of myself.” The ego keeps a full purse of opinions, defenses, and spiritual credentials. None of them is the kingdom.
What is blessed is the openness that remains when that purse is set down. Heaven, in this reading, is not a reward deferred. It is the inheritance of a mind no longer crowded with its own authorship. Theirs is the kingdom — present tense — because nothing now stands in its place.
