Matthew·The kingdom within·4 of 34

Treasure hid in a field

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.

Matthew 13:44 · King James Version

What you find is worth more than the inventory you were using to look for it.

An inner reading

The treasure is hidden, not absent. The field looks ordinary — the same life, the same mind — until attention strikes something that does not belong to the surface story. Joy, not duty, is what makes the man sell. He is not coerced into renunciation. He has seen a value that makes the old holdings feel like clutter.

“All that he hath” is the metaphysical point. Opinions, grievances, spiritual techniques, the story of being unfinished: these were currency in a market that cannot price the treasure. Buying the field means consenting to live in the ordinary place where the extraordinary was buried, rather than leaving the life you have in search of a holier one.
